The Chancellor’s office is trying to increase the number of fully Zero Textbook Cost pathways in our community colleges and will fund plans to implement these pathways. Join us to learn more about these paid efforts and how you can create a full ZTC pathway for your department and major. We will submit a plan in early Spring ‘23 for how we are going to implement ZTC pathways here at SCC in Fall/Spring 23/24. Does your department/division want to participate in this? If your department already offers mostly ZTC courses, please come talk to us. If your department offers very few, if any, ZTC courses, please come talk to us. We want to know of any barriers to converting your courses to ZTC courses. We may be able to purchase readers, class sets of textbooks, software, lab manuals, pay for OER creation, and more.

To help with your efforts, faculty can jointly apply for the OER HEERF grant and earn up to $5,000 for their efforts in converting to OER. If you have a class or two in your department that could benefit from an OER, come join to learn about how to get paid for that work.

This will make it cheaper and easier for students to complete their degrees. Many studies have shown that up to 2/3 of students don't purchase textbooks for one or more college classes. They also say that not purchasing a textbook probably negatively impacts their success. Removing this barrier to completing classes will help all students but especially those who have less to spend on textbooks like our disproportionally impacted students. Additionally, this provides an opportunity for faculty to increase representation and contextualization in their learning materials, something that traditional publishers to do not do.

Participants will:

  • understand what ZTC pathways are.
  • have the opportunity to participate in creating, and/or converting to, ZTC courses.
  • be able to explain how their department can participate in this grant.
  • be able to elaborate on any barriers their departments face related to ZTC pathways/courses.
  • have a better understanding of the ZTC and Low-Cost Textbook logos and related processes.
  • and more
