"MESA - how we retained 97% of our students with limited resources during a global pandemic"

Sacramento City College MESA (Math, Engineering, Science Achievement Program) is an equity-focused program that supports students who come from historically underrepresented backgrounds in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) to transfer competitively to a 4-year university program and enter a STEM career.

This presentation will focus on the semesters of Fall 2020 through Spring 2022 and how - during a global pandemic - we retained students, provided effective services with limited resources, and we'll also discuss our plans for the future.

MESA is an equity program that was born out of the civil rights movement during the 1960's. For over 50 years we have served students who are historically excluded in education, and specifically in the STEM fields. Currently, MESA requires that participating students must qualify for financial aid, must be first-generation college students, must be working toward their first bachelor's degree, and must be in a transfer-bound, calculus-based STEM major. Our district is striving to focus on retention, and we have some approaches that we are happy to share with our colleagues that have been effective in our program.
