Developing a safety culture that is woven throughout our courses, from beginning chemistry all the way through advanced organic and analytical chemistry courses, will not only make our labs in our new building safer for everyone but will help build student confidence in working safely in a lab and support their success in chemistry labs and beyond.
Topics may include:
- personal protective equipment
- fume hood use
- waste handling
- use of balances and other shared equipment
- communication with the stockroom
- lab cleanliness
- other general safety issues pertinent in a chemistry lab

SCC chemistry full-time and part-time faculty and staff
About the Presenters
Laura Gillies-Doherty and Tonya Atkins are Chemistry professors.
- Laura is a cross-disciplinary educator and research scientist with expertise in chemistry/biochemistry, food science, and business development.
- Tonya brings compassion to the classroom, incorporating OER (free resources) into her class and meeting students. She is accessible and makes the material engaging and enjoyable to learn.
