This session will address Generative Artificial Intelligence and its impact on education and future careers of students. It is designed to provide an introductory understanding of how AI is changing the landscape of education and the workforce and facilitate a multi-disciplinary discussion. The session will explore the various applications of AI and its potential to transform the way we teach, learn, and work.

The session will begin with an overview of generative AI and its various subfields, including natural language processing, computer vision, and deep learning, and how these technologies are being applied to solve complex problems in various domains. The session will then shift to the impact of AI on education at Los Rios and the regional workforce. Attendees will participate in an open discussion addressing how AI is changing the way we teach and learn, and sharing examples of how AI is already being used in classes and assessment methods. The discussion may also cover the potential impact of AI on the future of work, including the skills and competencies that will be in demand in the job market, and the ethical considerations surrounding AI, such as privacy, bias, and accountability.

By the end of the session, faculty will have a better understanding of the potential of AI in education and how it may impact their classrooms and the future careers of their students.

This session has limited seating, so pre-registration is strongly encouraged.

This session will be followed by an optional one-hour “AI Lab” session (2:00 pm to 3:00 pm) with hands-on activities. Attendees will work with text- and image-generating AI tools to gain a practical understanding of how these technologies work.

About the Presenters

Don Button, Design & Digital Media

Don has been teaching graphic design and web design at SCC since 2000. Prior to his second career in education he was an award-winning creative director and designer. As a young, tech-savvy designer he would have totally embraced AI; as a middle-aged, nearing retirement design professor, he’s a bit paranoid about the implications.

Dawna DeMartini, English

Dawna has been trying to figure out how to teach English at SCC since 2006. At first she worried that ChatGPT and the like would render her superfluous; however, she’s now convinced that writing teachers are becoming more important than ever.

Chris Seddon, Design Lab

Chris is a lifelong tech nerd who has been using computers since before they were cool. (Yes, even before the internet.) As the Coordinator of the Design Lab at SCC for the past 23 years, he's seen a lot of changes in the tech world. But his passion for helping people use technology to improve their lives has never wavered. Chris is always looking for new ways to make technology fun and accessible to everyone. He is always willing to help out, and he's always learning new things. (P.S. He had some help from AI on this bio, but don't tell anyone.)
