Geology and Geography Lab Playtime!
Kathryn Stanton and Craig Davis
An “open house” style PD opportunity Folks are welcome to stop by and play with a variety of activities in the lab. This is a hands-on event where science (aka “fun”) will happen! Come play with ARTIE, our student-built augmented reality sand box that teaches students about topography and the depiction of 3D structures on 2D maps. It combines literal sand with real-time augmented reality mapping features and is always fun to explore. Also dig in (literally…) to our EmRiver Stream Table, a working, interactive model of a river, complete with flowing water and sediments. In the river table you can create dams, channels, and other structures, and watch how the river forms, then changes, in response to natural and human activities. We will also have out (for the first time on public display!) our TerraSpec Halo hand-held mineral identifier, which uses near-infrared spectroscopy to identify a huge range of minerals! It looks like a giant Star Trek phaser, and is used by field geologists from many disciplines. This spectrometer is a rare at the community college level, and is a critical tool for students who want to use state-of-the-science technology.
Keep looking here for more updates on more labs that will be on display!
