Over the last few years, the SCC Communication Department has developed courses and programs that has diversified our offerings to intentionally include students not interested in transferring, students not interested in obtaining an AA/AS, and/or working students who desire a four-month, 12-unit Certificate of Achievement to assist them in employment, upskilling, and/or career promotion.
In the wake of the new CALGETC being hammered out and given that "Oral Communication" remains at the center of the debate between UC, CSU, and CCC, we thought it could help non-COMM folx to get a better overview of how Communication as a discipline and department are moving forward. COMM faculty will share up-to-date information concerning the "Oral Comm" requirement in the upcoming CALGETC GE pattern. We will identify and differentiate the various courses that SCC offers that meet this GE requirement (COMM 301, 303, 331, 361, 481).
We will highlight two classes somewhat new to the books:
- COMM 341: Organizational Communication
- COMM 369: Gateway to Communication Studies: Personal and Professional Development.
We will identify two 12-unit Certificates designed to be obtainable in one semester:
- Applied Communication Skills
- Professional and Workplace Communication
If time remains, we will reveal two classes the department anticipates a 1-1-24 Catalog date:
- COMM 336: Conflict Management: Mediation
- COMM 339: Health Communication
Finally, we will look toward the future with two Certificates in the works that may obtain a 1-1-24 Catalog date:
- Conflict Management
- Performance Studies (interdisciplinary with Theatre Arts and Music)
