This retreat, while of special interest to those who teach Communication, is open to all faculty (most notably faculty from the 19 other programs on campus who have incorporated COMM curricula into non-COMM programs). We will review national and state disciplinary standards and update State and/or Federal legislative mandates including what more we know about how CALGETC will transform Oral Comm requirements for transfer in 2024-2025. We will center the dialogue to help faculty better align their syllabi with departmental standards and expectations for best practices. We will incorporate our COMM Faculty Resources Canvas page. Faculty may be asked to share syllabi as well as discuss innovative lectures, assignments, and activities that fuel student success in Communication.

Presenter
Kim Church has been teaching at SCC since 2001 (and is a former adjunct instructor at Sac State, Sierra College, and Cosumnes River College). recently served as Interim Chair, and will continue as Department Chair 2023-2025. At SCC, Kim has taught Public Speaking (301), Oral Interpretation of Literature (305), Argument and Debate (311), Interpersonal Communication (321), Conflict Management (335), and Communication Experience (361).
Kim launched two COMM Certificates in 2022 (Applied Communication, and Professional and Workplace Communication) and has nurtured the department to launch two more Certificates in 2023: Performance Studies and Conflict Management (both currently at Board Approval) to help here department pivot to the post-pandemic realities of shrinking student populations due in large part to major competition from private corporations who have entered the higher education market. If it's Certificates the students are looking for instead of or in addition to an AA or ADT, SCC Communication Department is ready to satisfy that student need and provide the education and support the student needs to succeed.
Kim has also recently written curricula for two new COMM courses, one of which has been cataloged (Pathways to Communication: Personal and Professional Development) and one that is currently at Board Approval (Health Communication Competencies: Career-Building Strategies and Skills). As evidenced in the titles, both courses were launched to better serve students whose primary purpose for SCC enrollment is career exploration, job readiness, job upskilling, or job reskilling.
