This workshop will clarify and discuss what is meant by the “nature gap,” that is, the lack of diversity and equity in nature-based recreation activities. In our time together, we will also consider current scientific evidence and anecdata on the clear and vital connection between spending time outdoors and boosting well-being and performance, both for instructor and student. This session also invites participants to engage in the natural world by taking a short walk around campus. In this way, this workshop is intended to be preparation for participating in a faculty & staff walking group this fall. However, today’s walk is not a requirement for joining this semester’s walking group.
Each date in the series will offer informal discussion of data, both scientific evidence & anecdata; an opportunity for time in nature in the form of a short walk; and informal personal reflection on the day's natural world experience, likely in the form of a Jamboard or Canvas Discussion, covering topics like equity and racialized spaces, classroom challenges and mental wellness, and bodily movement. Future sessions will likely be roughly an hour in length.
