As we increase our in-person footprint at SCC, many students are returning from months or years of conditioning in online education. While in-person teaching creates great opportunities for students to connect with one another, engage with the instructor, and learn material in diverse ways, it can be a challenging adjustment for teachers and students when the educational pattern of learning has been narrowed (online quizzes, discussion boards, navigation of materials) via online modalities.
How has the socialization of online learning informed attitudes of attendance in an in-person classroom, communicating with peers and instructors, capacity to be present and alert in a classroom, and a willingness to move beyond the standardization of online modalities to embrace the potential and diversity of learning that can take place an in-person environment?
This event will provide an opportunity for instructors to discuss the challenges they have experienced with the return to in-person teaching such as increased absenteeism, student mental health, lower (or different than pre-Covid) engagement, and gaps in student to student and student to faculty communication. Additionally, time will be allotted to share ideas to resocialize and provide our students with tools to promote in-person and long-terms success.
