Inaugural Zero Waste Convocation!

SCC Fall Convocation will be held in the Performing Arts Center with a morning gathering for coffee/tea, tabling connections with an array of campus programs and student focused spaces, and catching up with colleagues before the main program starts at 9:00 a.m.

Program Highlights

We are thrilled to announce our keynote speaker for the morning will be Dr. Cutcha Risling Baldy, Associate Professor and Department Chair of Native American Studies at Cal Poly Humboldt. Her research is focused on Indigenous feminisms, California Indians, Environmental Justice, and Decolonization, and we are delighted to have her join us this year for Fall Convocation.

This year's program will be packed with incredible presentations from programs across campus, including Student Health & Wellness, Panther Cares/Basic Needs Center, Equity Pathways, Native American Student Support & Success Programs and Native American Student Success Center, the Disability Cultural Center, our FYE and DHSI Caminos de La Cuidad teams, and our Student Associated Council. We also look forward to hearing important communication from our institutional leaders, Chancellor Brian King and President Garcia.

Zero Waste Event: Bring Your Cup/Utensils

Finally, please help us celebrate this Fall 2024 Convocation as our first Zero Waste Convocation! We are asking all employees who attend the morning festivities to please bring your own container for hot/cold beverages and consider bringing your own plate and cloth napkin to help us even further reduce our carbon footprint. Compostable plates and utensils and napkins will be available, but this is our chance to take the challenge to produce as little waste as possible, just by bringing materials from our offices and home to take care of our own personal reusable diningware supplies. We will also have a table for anyone who would like to bring any beverage container they no longer need/use that are recently cleaned and in good condition to leave for someone else to use as a shared resource model, so go through those cupboards and share that extra water bottle you've never touched with others!

Talk to folks around you, remind your department members to bring their own cup, learn more about the three general waste streams we have on campus, and let's practice sustainability in action everyday! If you have any questions, please reach out to Sophie Wheeler, our incredible Sustainability Coordinator who will join us on stage for sustainability tips, tricks, and practices we can do daily to help our planet.

Modality and Accessibility

This will be an in-person convocation with a Zoom Webinar available for employees to support accessibility needs. Following the convocation program, please plan to attend department/division specific meetings for your area. Contact your Division Office for further details on area specific meeting information and communicate any specific attendance needs you may have regarding convocation. It's incredibly important as we focus our interests on sustaining and elevating our varied campus cultures to have the opportunity to make those personal connections and be in community with each other -- we are looking forward to learning and feeding our activist hearts together.

We invite all our colleagues with any ADA accommodation and/or accessibility needs to join us in the PAC for in-person interpreters or on the Zoom webinar for access to online interpreters and remote live captioning. We will offer links for these remote options as we get closer to the big day.

Please be aware that the PAC currently has some significant limitations to its lighting and sound, so we will be unable to make adjustments or provide spotlights for interpreters and presenters on stage unfortunately. Please take this into consideration as you share your accessibility needs and interests with your deans and managers.

Remote Live Captioning

Can't wait to enjoy the start of the Fall 2024 semester with you!
