I will present my impression from a recent trip to Senegal and discuss the direction of the work I intend to do during my current sabbatical this fall semester.

Application to Curriculum

This work focuses on the development of two culturally relevant and engaging STEM courses:

Introduction to Astronomy

This course intends to incorporate indigenous knowledge and highlights contributions from African, South American, Native American, and Asia-Pacific cultures to present a global and inclusive perspective on astronomy.

Physics of Entertainment

This course uses real-world applications of physics in music, film, sports, and games to increase accessibility and engagement.

It explores core physics concepts such as mechanics, waves, and optics through entertaining and culturally meaningful contexts.

Presenter

Dr. Nana Ngassam is a Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Sacramento City College with a deep commitment to inclusive, equity-driven, and culturally responsive STEM education.

Originally from Cameroon, he brings a global perspective informed by his academic and professional experiences across Cameroon, France, and the United States.  His participation in the PACE (Pathways to African Centered Education) program the last two years and his recent faculty development experience in Senegal deepened his focus on decolonizing science curricula and promoting equity in STEM.

Dr. Ngassam is developing innovative, student-centered STEM courses that integrate indigenous knowledge systems and culturally relevant content. Dr. Ngassam is developing innovative, student-centered STEM courses that integrate indigenous knowledge systems and culturally relevant content.
