This interactive workshop is designed to support managers, faculty, and staff in effectively using Handshake to recruit and hire student employees. Participants will learn how to create compelling job postings, navigate the platform efficiently, and connect with a diverse pool of Sacramento City College students seeking employment opportunities.

The session will include a live demonstration of Handshake, best practices for writing student-centered job descriptions, and strategies to increase visibility and applicant engagement. Attendees will leave with the tools and confidence to successfully post positions and contribute to student employment pathways on campus.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Navigate Handshake to post and manage student job opportunities
  • Develop clear, inclusive, and engaging job postings tailored to SCC students
  • Understand how student employment supports retention, completion, and career readiness
  • Apply strategies to reach diverse student populations and increase applicant pools

Alignment with Program and College Goals

This session aligns with the Career Services Program’s mission to connect students with meaningful employment opportunities that enhance their academic and career development. By equipping managers with the tools to effectively use Handshake, this workshop strengthens campus-wide collaboration in supporting student success.

The session also supports institutional goals by promoting equitable access to on-campus employment, which is directly linked to student retention, persistence, and completion of certificates, AA/AS degrees, and transfer pathways.

Support for Student Success

Student employment plays a critical role in fostering career readiness, financial stability, and a sense of belonging on campus.

This session emphasizes how well-designed job opportunities can serve as high-impact practices that support students in achieving their educational goals.

By improving how positions are marketed and filled, managers can help reduce barriers to employment and create more accessible pathways for students to gain valuable work experience while completing their studies.

Centering Student and Community Voices

This presentation highlights the diverse backgrounds, experiences, and needs of Sacramento City College students. Many SCC students balance work, school, and personal responsibilities, making access to flexible, on-campus employment essential.

The session will encourage managers to design job postings that are inclusive, transparent, and responsive to the realities of the students we serve. Emphasis will be placed on equity-minded hiring practices that uplift underrepresented and disproportionately impacted student populations.
