Cal-GETC Scenarios and Processes

These examples are just based on the scenario/question. There are lots of other options when meeting with a student, but in these cases, it is just to address this one specific situation.

Cal-GETC Standards (on ICAS website)

  1. Student has CLEP scores for GE that the CSU accepts. What would be the best plan for the student for general education to transfer? 
  2. Can a student enrolled at a UC who transfers to a CCC then wants to return to a UC, use Cal-GETC?
  3. If a course is taken at UC/CSU has similar gE area assigned to our GE and standards, should you certify the course?
  4. Accreditation for Cal-GETC is:
    • Institutional
    • Regional

  5. If courses from non-CCC are not similar to local CCC Cal-GETC approved GE, can they be used for Cal-GETC? If yes, how would you know? Are they other ways to know how to apply a non-CCC Course to Cal-GETC?
  6. What page in the Cal-GETC standards is the list of approved accrediting bodies to be used for Cal-GETC?
  7. Can upper division courses be used toward lower division Cal-GETC? If yes, in what situations?
  8. What international course work can be applied toward Cal-GETC? Are there exceptions of areas that can be applied? Are there limits to the number of courses that can be applied?
  9. Does modality of a course matter for Cal-GETC?
  10. Which of these types of courses ARE NOT appropriate for Cal-GETC?

  11. Are there a minimum number of units that must be used towards each area for Cal-GETC?
  12. Is there a limit to the number of external exams that can be applied to Cal-GETC?
  13. Do external exams expire? What score is needed to use AP scores on Cal-GETC?
  14. Does AP/Exam have an equivalent for Area 1B and Area 1C?
  15. Can A5 Exam meet 5A or 5B and 5C? Can an AP Exam that is no longer in catalog or active be used for Cal-GETC?
  16. Can a course be applied to the Cal-GETC for an area that is not on the Cal-GETC AP Chart?
  17. Is there an exception to the minimum unit requirement for each area? e minimum units a course must be to apply to Cal-GETC?  If yes, what area?
  18. When a student has both semester and quarter units, which way to do you convert the units?
  19. Minimum grade for Cal-GETC certification?
  20. How many credit/no credit units can be applied to Cal-GETC?
  21. Can courses be taught in other languages as long as they are on the ICAS approved creditor list? Are there exceptions?
  22. Are UC and CSU Ethnic Studies Course competencies exactly the same? Where would you find the competencies?
  23. If a student attends 5 CCC’s, which CCC certifies their Cal-GETC?
